“Kindness is the language that the deaf can hear and the blind can see.”

This quote by Mark Twain sets the mood for this newsletter. From a young age we are taught many things. Specifically, to not bite, to share, and to show respect to your elders. So in a way kindness is instilled in our brains from the first breath we take. Being kind is more than not biting and sharing. The true dictionary definition is the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.

Making the world a better place should be a top priority. Showing kindness is one way of making this happen. If you are unsure about how to show kindness I have 5 random acts of kindness that can lift anyone’s spirits. Including you!

1. Compliment a stranger. I know that every single person has seen someone in the grocery store and thought I love their outfit or that is the coolest shirt ever. So why not tell the person? It doesn’t have to be a compliment about someone’s clothes. You can complement someone’s hair or smile. You are destined to make their day better.

2. Smile at someone just because. You never know what someone is going through so a simple smile may brighten their entire day. I know you’ve had days where all you wanted was a reassuring smile. Do that for someone!

3. Pay for the person behind you! We have all seen the elderly couple sitting in a restaurant that has the sweetest reaction when someone buys their meal. They probably go home and call their kids or grandkids to tell them. That small act of kindness made their day or possibly even week!

4. Send a care package to deployed soldiers. While overseas, many soldiers don’t have the supplies they need. This could be snacks or candy for when they’re feeling down, a backup toothbrush just in case, and even books to read. You could pack a small box and send it to a deployed soldier. They fight for our rights and protect our country, this is the least we could do.

5. Write a thank you note ‘just because’. Giving someone a handwritten note and telling them how grateful you are can show major kindness and even respect. Many people will hang onto that note for years to come.

Being kind is not a difficult task. Why would you want to be rude when you could be a kind, considerate person and see people’s faces light up when you smile at them or compliment them. A small act of kindness a day will change our world. How will you be kind? Will you pay it forward or throw a smile at someone in the grocery store?
